The Pretoria News
Sonn to oppose White for top post
Pretoria News - 2 July 1999

United Cricket Board vice-president Percy Sonn has announced his intention to stand against Raymond White, who is currently holding the position as president of the UCB.

Sonn, president of the Western Province Cricket Board and said to have been at the forefront of changing the thinking process at national level, has been in senior cricket administration for more than 25 years.

He confirmed yesterday that he would definitely oppose White, who took over the No.1 cricket administrator's post from Krish Macherdhuj last season. Mackerdhuj has subsequently become an ambassador for South Africa in Tokyo.

The UCB's annual meeting is scheduled for July 24 at their headquarters in Johannesburg.

``I've been asked by Western Province to contest the position of the UCB presidency,'' he said. ``After giving it some thought, I declared my intentions yesterday and have already spoken to Raymond about my plans.''

Sonn, considered to be one of the hard-liners from the days of the defunct South African Cricket Board, is all for transformation in South African cricket.

And White, who played first-class cricket for Transvaal and in the County championship in his heyday, may have a bitter fight on his hands to remain at the top of the UCB. Following his remarks on the UCB's transformation process at Newlands during the test match between South Africa and the West Indies, he seems to have lost some support from the provincial Boards. But Sonn says: ``It's not going to be a bloody affair. It's no big deal and I've told this to Raymond. We have respect for each other and I believe we must work in the interest of South African cricket.''

The 49-year-old administrator has been Western Province's president for the past three seasons. His involvement in cricket goes back to the days when he played for Bellville before eventually linking up with a club in Parow.

Sonn has yet to inform the United Cricket Board of his intentions. White was not available for comment last night.
