The Daily Star, Bangladesh Saber for Sumit
The Daily Star - 29 June 1999

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday announced a 14-member national squad for the Asian Youth U-19 cricket championship, scheduled to begin in Singapore from July 5.

Fahim Muntasir Sumit, the discarded national off-spinner, will lead the defending champions in their first match against Hong Kong on the opening day.

A member of the youth team that won the Plate title in the world Youth Championship in South Africa two years back, Fahim is a surprise selection despite being considered as an over-aged player by many a cricket critics.

Although Fahim, who played for Kalabagan in the Premier cricket last year, got the Board president's nod his boon companion Sabbir Khan failed to make it to the final 14 despite being included in the provisional list of 20. President Saber Hossain Chowdhury has made the final choice as the Board is currently running without a selection committee.

Placed in Group A, Bangladesh will play their second match against Malaysia on July 6. They will play their last group league match against UAE on July 7.

The semifinal will be held on July 9 while final is billed for July 10. Top two finishers from Asia will qualify for the World Youth championship to be held in Sri Lanka next January.

Fahim Muntasir (captain)
Imran Ahmed (vice-captain)
Nahidul Haq Shaon

Golam Mortuza (wk)
Rezaul Haq Naeem
