Barbados Clubs: Texaco put out Malvern The Barbados Nation - 14 June 1999 Former champions Malvern were sent crashing out of the Barbados Fire & Commercial Shield competition when they lost by six wickets to Texaco at Brighton yesterday. Sent in to bat by the home team on a softish pitch, the St. George side never recovered from a dreadful start when they lost their first two wickets without any runs on the board. They slumped embarrassingly to 47 for eight, but some face was saved by a 64-run ninth-wicket partnership between Nathaniel Sargeant and John Nicholls that lifted the total to 129 all out in 39.3 overs. Battingsensibly, Sargeant struck five fours in an unbeaten 48 while Nicholls' contribution was 19. The Malvern innings was undermined by opening fast bowler Euclid Woodroffe who returned the excellent figures of five for 23. Leo King then hit an attacking 61 not out for Texaco to propel Texaco into the quarterfinals with 16.3 overs remaining. Holders BRC also advanced yesterday along with Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFYP), Prison Officers. Lord's, St. John Cultural, Conrad Hunte SC and YMCA. One hattrick was recorded yesterday by BDFYP's Curtis Gaskin who took 6-33 as the young sportsmen overwhelmed King's Park by 124 runs.
