Glamorgan (14) v Hants (3) (Southampton)

Both sides have had two draws and two defeats in their last four outings. Recent meetings: 1998, Hampshire won by nine wickets with a century by Adrian Aymes. The 1997 match was drawn despite both teams forfeiting an innings. In 1996, Dimitri Mascarenhas had the best bowling figures by a Hampshire debutant since 1899 but the match was drawn. 1995, Hampshire won by eight wickets. Form: Michael Powell has scored 438 runs for Glamorgan, Will Kendall 626 for Hampshire. Team news: Hampshire replace Simon Renshaw with Peter Hartley and add Shaun Udal.


Gloucs (13) v Notts (8) (Bristol)

Gloucestershire beat Somerset in their last match, their first victory of the season. Notts have had one draw and one defeat since their last win. Recent meetings: 1998, Courtney Walsh's last match for the county, Gloucs won by 189 runs. 1997, Notts won by 21 runs. 1996, Notts won by an innings and three runs. 1995, Gloucs won by 134 runs. Form: Hampshire, Matt Windows 472 runs, Mike Smith 34 wickets. Notts, Paul Johnson 511 runs and Vasbert Drakes 37 wickets. Team news: Mike Smith is out with a leg injury and is replaced by Robert Cunliffe. For Notts, Tim Robinson, Richard Stemp and Wayne Noon are in the side replacing Alex Wharf, Chris Tolley and Chris Read, who is on Test duty.


Kent (9) v Warwickshire (2) (Maidstone)

Kent have three draws from their last four games, Warwicks four wins from five. Recent meetings: 1998, Warwicks won by 186 runs. 1997, Kent won by four wickets. 1996, Kent won by 32 runs. 1995, Warwicks won by an innings and 105 runs, finishing third in the championship. Kent were bottom for the first time in 100 years. Form: Andrew Symonds 505 runs and Min Patel 28 wickets for Kent. Warwickshire's David Hemp has 616 runs and Ed Giddins and Ashley Giles have 25 wickets each. Team news: Martin McCague plays instead of Dean Headley, who is in the England squad. Warwicks add Anurag Singh to the XI who beat Notts.


Middlesex (7) v Derbys (16) (Lord's)

Middlesex have played four times since their last win, two draws and two defeats. Derbyshire have one defeat and one draw since their last victory. Recent meetings: 1998, Derbyshire won by four wickets. 1997, Middlesex won by 131 runs. 1996, Derbyshire won by 363 runs. 1995, match drawn after no play on third day. Form: Michael Slater 391 runs, Dominic Cork and Phil DeFreitas 24 wickets for Derbyshire. Justin Langer 628 runs and Simon Cook 21 dismissals for Middlesex. Team news: Mark Ramprakash and Phil Tufnell, who are in the England squad, are replaced by James Hewitt and Andrew Strauss. Derbyshire will make possibly three changes from the side who played Essex.


Northants (15) v Worcs (12) (Northampton)

Northants beat Lancashire in May and have lost twice since then, with one draw. Worcestershire won at home in their last match. Recent meetings: 1998, Worcestershire won by 157 runs. 1997, Worcs won by 101 runs. 1996, match drawn. David Sales, of Northants, scored the first double century by a debutant in first-class cricket. 1996, Northants won by five wickets. Form: Matthew Hayden 681 runs and Devon Malcolm 30 wickets for Northants. Vikram Solanki 454 runs and Alamgir Sheriyar 47 wickets for Worcestershire. Team news: Northants unchanged. Tom Moody returns for Worcs after World Cup duty with Australia.


Somerset (11) v Sussex (6) (Taunton)

Somerset have three defeats and one draw since their last win. Sussex beat Yorkshire in their last fixture. Recent meetings: The matches in 1998 and 1997 were drawn. In 1996, Somerset won in three days by eight wickets. Form: Somerset's Rob Turner has 741 runs and Andy Caddick has taken 42 wickets. For Sussex, Richard Montgomerie has 629 runs and James Kirtley 30 wickets. Team news: Piran Holloway is replaced by Marcus Trescothick (recovered from knee injury). Keith Parsons or Steffan Jones will play instead of Andrew Caddick. For Sussex, the only change is Wasim Khan for the injured Richard Montgomerie.


Surrey (1) v Durham (18) (The Oval)

Surrey have won five of their last six matches and Durham won for the first time this season when they beat Northants in the last round. Recent meetings: Surrey have won every match since the championship reverted to four-day matches in 1993. Form: Surrey will be without their leading run-scorer, Mark Butcher, and wicket-taker, Alex Tudor. Jon Lewis has scored 464 runs for Durham and Simon Brown has 28 wickets. Team news: Surrey bring in Adam Hollioake, Martin Bicknell, Jason Ratcliffe, Gary Butcher and Saqlain Mushtaq to replace the four players in the England squad. Durham make one change from the team who beat Northants, Melvyn Betts for John Wood.


Leics (5) v Yorkshire (4) (Leicester, starts tomorrow)

Leicestershire have drawn their last four. Yorkshire lost to Sussex, their first defeat in five. Recent meetings: The 1998 and 1997 matches were draws. 1996, Leicestershire won by an innings and 151 runs. 1995, Yorkshire won by nine wickets. Form: Aftab Habib's 561 runs have earned the Leicestershire player an England call-up; James Ormond and Mike Kasprowicz have both taken 21 wickets. Yorkshire's David Byas has 596 runs, Matt Hoggard has 28 wickets, one fewer than Chris Silverwood, also on England duty.
