St. Joseph's after a fine team effort, scored a pulsating 38-run win over traditional rivals St. Peter's to regain the Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai Memorial Shield in their annual limited overs cricket encounter at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

The Joes thoroughly vindicated their decision to bat first after winning the toss, rattling up an imposing 270 for 6 in their stipulated 50 overs.

The Josephian batsmen were in full bloom as their top order displayed pleasing form. Last week's 'Big Match' centurion Dilan Ramanayake top scored with 64, followed up with another 62 by Dilanka Perera. Perera and Ramanayake added an entertaining 90 runs for the third wicket. Perera had three fours and a six in his innings while Ramanayake reached the boundary on seven occasions.

Skipper Roshan de Silva and Dilanka Perera were associated in an aggressive fourth wicket stand of 84 runs.

The Joes scored 80 runs in the last 10 overs as the runs came from the bats of Roshan de Silva and Dilanka Perera. Their final total also had 40 extras which included 15 wides.

The Peterites in their run chase, were always behind the required run-rate and whenever they tried to force the pace, lost wickets at regular intervals. Beisdes a good sixth wicket partnership between Suranga Pinto and Malin Silva who defied the Joes attack for a while adding 69 runs, the rest perished with the asking run rate zooming up.

Jehan Jayasuriya kept the Peterite hopes high with a calculated innings of 58 with seven fours.

The Peterites needed 81 runs in the last 10 overs with only 4 wickets intact and in the last five overs they required 49 runs with three wickets in hand.

Josephian skipper Roshan de Silva in a final burst got two vital wickets to give his side the win.
