Dawn Pakistan: PM's sportsman of the year award revived

ISLAMABAD, March 14: Mushahid Hussain Syed, Ministerof Information with additional charge of sports, tourism, culture and youth affairs, on Sunday announced the revival of Prime Minister's Sportsman of the Year Award with a cash prize of Rs 100,000 as an incentive for outstanding achievements at nationaland international levels.

The minister while briefing journalists over the number of steps taken by the government to encourage youth to compete insports contests said that the award for first PM Sportsman of the Year willbe given in May. The performances of players between1996-1997 will be adjudged by a four-member committee headed by the minister with three members which include senator Aqil Shah, Prof.Anwar Chowdhryand Director General Pakistan Sports Board. The second award after screening the performances of 1998 will be presented at the end of current year.

The sports channel will give equal time to international and domestic sports, but the minister said that the forthcoming Cricket World Cup will be one of the mega events on the channel.

To encourage and groom youth the summer training camps programme Under-18 will be launched. The modalities at the provincial levels have been worked out, the minister said. These camps will follow inter-provincial competitions which would be further elaborated into youth sports exchange programmes with countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran and Turkey.
