Sri Lanka Schools: Isipatana's tailenders shore up side Ranjan Anandappa - 7 March 1999 Isipatana's tailenders Nuwan Chamara (52), Milinda Wickremasinghe (41) and Malinda Abeyratne (38 n.o.) put their team on the right course, when they replied with 196 to Thurstan's 106 on the first day of their 36th 'Big Match' at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday. Isipatana were 71 for 6 at one stage after restricting Thurstan for 106. Nuwan Chamara and Milinda Wickremasinghe added 67 runs for the seventh wicket and thereafter the last wicket stand of 53 runs by Milinda Wickremasinghe 41 and Malinda Abeyratne 38 n.o. created a new record for the last wicket between the two schools. On a seaming wicket with plenty of grass and bounce, the fast bowlers of either side extracted a fair amount of life. Thushara Perera and Mohammed Fiyaz of Thurstan took four wickets apiece while the Isipatana duo Niluka Pieris and Manoj Fernando bagged three wickets each. The only spinner who impressed was Malinda Bandara who also took three wickets and who was also involved in the last wicket stand for Isipatana. Isipatana has an overall lead of 96 and the match seems to be interestingly poised with two innings left to be played today.
