Sri Lanka: New-look selection committee
Sa'adi Thawfeeq - 31 March 1999

The first step the newly-elected executive committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) took when they met yesterday was to recommend a fresh selection committee to the Minister of Sports for ratification.

The ExCo decided to drop T.B. Kehelgamuwa and K.M. Nelson from the existing committee and instead recommended the names of two former Sri Lanka all-rounders - Uvaisul Karnain and Lalith Kaluperuma.

Duleep Mendis and Ashantha de Mel have been retained, while Shammi Silva, who is the chairman of the regional selection committee has been co-opted as the fifth selector.

The ExCo did not name the chairman of selectors which post was held earlier by Mendis.

The 'Daily News' reliably understands that Mendis is being considered for a managerial post in the Sri Lanka team for the World Cup.

The first job of the new-look selection committee will be to pick the Sri Lanka World Cup squad of 15 before April 1.
