Finland welcomes the cricket season with freezing temperatures
Tony Munro - 21 May 1999

Jason Barry, and his One Man and a Bat tour, is likely to include the main event of the Finland's cricket season, the Finnish Sixes, to be held on June 19, on his itinerary.

Meanwhile, in the season-opener last Saturday week, (with a chilling wind and +1centigrade temperature!!!) Turku CC triumphed over SKK on the last-but-one ball of the game with their final pair at the wicket. SKK had a slow start but A.Armitage and S.Thurling took the score briskly from 108/4 after 28 overs to 166 before Armitage was bowled in the 37th over. Some lusty blows in the final 3 overs saw Thurling to 67n.o. and SKK closed on 196/5. Turku replied and scored freely but lost wickets too - a run out, and two wickets-a-piece for Gibbs-Harris, Thurling and Armitage saw the visitors reach 188/9 after 39 overs. A sound innings from Justin held the Turku innings together and with the field set back, two fours took him to 91n.o. and saw Turku home with a ball to spare.

Whether there will be a formal competition in Finland this northern summer is still being ascertained.
