Arjuna described as 'Napoleon'- Sanath and Aravinda in Gower's World Cup XI Reggie Fernando - 12 May 1999 Former England captain David Gower who is playing a major role and spearheading the 1999 Cricket World Cup broadcasts has announced his own World Cup XI from the players of the twelve countries among whom are Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva. Gower's team is: Adam Gilchrist (Australia), Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Brian Lara (West Indies), Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka), Michael Bevan (Australia), Jacques Kallis (South Africa), Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Darren Gough (England), Shoaib Akthar (Pakistan) and Glenn McGrath (Australia). Of Jayasuriya, Gower says - 'Inelegant but effective clatterer who is a believer in using the space over the top of the fielders. Attacks from ball one'. He describes de Silva as - 'Very correct batsman with magnificent temperament. Superb improviser who ensures the scoreboard is always moving'. Meanwhile the Mail on Sunday weighing up the odds describes Sri Lanka's skipper Ranatunga as 'Napoleon' probably because he has won many of the past battles and goes on to assess the chances of the 12 hopeful countries.
