The Jamaica Gleaner Jamaica Clubs: St. Catherine lead new champs Lucas

St. Catherine Cricket Club had to settle for first innings points over newly crowned Rothman's Surrey Senior Cup champions Lucas after their final round game ended in a tame draw at Nelson Oval yesterday. Scores: Lucas 153 and 233 for seven; St. Catherine C.C. 189.

St. Catherine, resuming on their overnight 145 for four, added a further 44 runs before being bowled out after facing 65.3 overs. West Indies A and Jamaica allrounder Christopher Gayle captured six wickets.

The principal scorers for St. Catherine were Tamar Lambert 46, Renford Pinnock Jnr. 39, Randy Nelson 25 and Bevon Brown 16 as Gayle bagged six for 37 off 18.3 overs.

In Lucas' second innings Gayle returned to make 79. He featured in a 129-run stand for the first wicket with Royan Smith who made an even 50.

Delroy Morgan was also among the runs for the champions as he was left unbeaten on 41 and Wayne Gayle on nine when the game was eventually called off after 62 overs.

At Sabina Park: Kingston defeated Portland by seven wickets after losing first innings points.

Scores: Portland 130 and 170; Kingston 117 and 184-3.

Kingston, needing 184 for victory yesterday, saw captain Lloyd Black with 80 and Nicholas Austin 66 posting 150 runs for the second wicket after they lost opener Raymond Ferguson for 29 at 33 for one. Renford Boadie was the best of the bowlers for Portland with 2-22.

At Good Year Oval: The Jamaica Defence Force had a four-wicket victory over hosts St. Thomas.

Scores: St. Thomas 54 and 154; JDF 164-6 declared and 48-6.

Pacer Howard Copeland with a career best 8-44 was the main destroyer as St. Thomas after being bowled out cheaply in their first innings put up a much better show in the second innings.

Set a meagre winning target of 45 the Soldiers were made to toil. Clinton Bent with 3-22 and Charles Freckleton with 2-25 rocked the top-order batting of the men from Up Park Camp as they lost six wickets on their way to victory.
