The Electronic Telegraph Marshall has cancer surgery
The Electronic Telegraph - 31 May 1999

West Indies fast bowling legend Malcolm Marshall is making excellent progress after undergoing abdominal surgery last week.

During his recovery period, Marshall will be in contact with Sir Viv Richards and the World Cup team to advise on tactics and strategy for the rest of the competition.

A statement issued by West Indies team doctor Rudi Webster revealed that X-rays and detailed tests had confirmed that Marshall had a tumour in his colon.

``Mr Marshall has taken the events of the last fortnight with courage, fortitude and exceptional inner strength,'' added Dr Webster.

Marshall will need a period of convalescence before starting chemotherapy at University Hospital, Birmingham, and has stressed that if the treatment goes well, he will resume his duties as West Indies coach later in the summer.

Marshall said: ``I am looking forward to making a full recovery as soon as I can.''
