Dawn Miandad to seek KCCA President-ship
The Dawn - 3 May 1999

KARACHI, May 2: A dejected and depressed former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad said he would contest next year's Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) elections.

Talking to Dawn from Lahore, Miandad said he was upset with the way he has been treated in the last two weeks.

``And the best way is to root out the element of unfairness from Pakistan cricket. And for that, I will now step in administration and KCCA president-ship will be the first step in that direction,'' he said.

The KCCA president automatically becomes eligible to qualify as a member of the PCB executive council.

Miandad arrived late Sunday evening from Lahore and according to sources is expected to meet some officials of the KCCA. He is expected to form a rival group and will attempt to get a vote of no confidence against the current setup of Nusrat Azeem as president and Prof Sirajul Islam Bukhari as secretary.

He promised that he would put the Karachi cricket back on road as it was in a shabby condition at the moment. To recall, Karachi lost the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy title to Peshawar while the best of its two teams failed to clear the first hurdle in the National One-day Championship. The second string qualified for the semi-finals where it lost to ultimate winners Allied Bank. Karachi Under-19 were the losing finalists to Rawalpindi in the National Juniors Cup.

He said Nusrat Azeem being a councillor from Karachi did little to promote Karachi cricket.

But Azeem denied that charge in the press conference. ``When I sit in the council meeting, I say what is in the best interest of the country. I don't support an individual.''
