Mercantile sixes on May 8, 9 Ranjan Anandappa - 6 May 1999 Union Assurance Ltd. will sponsor the popular mercantile six-a-side cricket tournament for the fifth year in succession on May 8 and 9 at the MCA and Health Grounds respectively. The tournament from the quarter final stage onwards will be conducted at the MCA grounds on the second day till the finals. The Mercantile Cricket Association has decided not to field two teams from one firm as they have done in the past because if two teams from one establishment meet each other, at times it tends to become a farce. Thirty one teams are expected to participate at this year's tournament and valuable cash awards will be presented to the winners and runners up along with the Union Assurance Trophy. A trophy and cash award will also be presented to the best batsman,best bowler and man of the final and the batsman who hits the highest number of sixes. With regard to the event a press briefing was held at the Mercantile Cricket Association Auditorium yesterday with Chief Executive Officer of Union Assurance Ltd. H.A. Rehmanjee as chief guest. Access Group of Companies 'A' are the defending champions and Bartleet Group runners-up. Ramal Jasinghe (General Manager Marketing UA), Deepal Abeysekera (Assistant GM Marketing), Gehan Siribaddena (President Mercantile CA), Tissa Madigasekera (General Secretary MCA), Basil Perera (Chairman Tournament Secretary MCA) were also present at the conference.
