India vs New Zealand Second ODI at Hyderabad: Statistical highlights

- It was the 1523rd ODI in cricket history.
- It was the 422nd match for India and 334th for New Zealand.
- It was the 54th match between the two sides. The record now reads:
India 28, New Zealand 23, No result 3.
- It was the 16th match between the two sides on Indian soil. The
record now reads: India 13, New Zealand 3.
- It was the 12th match on this ground (third involving New
Zealand) and first between these two sides.
- It was India's 40th match in 1999. India thus equalled its own
record of playing most matches in a calendar year. India has
played the number of matches during 1998.
- Umpire Jasbir Singh was officiating in his fourth match, while
umpire SK Tarapore was making his debut as international
umpire. He became the 77th Indian umpire to stand in a ODI.
- Sachin Tendulkar was playing his 226th match. He thus surpassed
Kapil Dev's tally of 225 matches. Now among Indians only Md Azharuddin
has appeared in more mat ches - 323.
- Sachin Tendulkar, while reaching his 24th ODI hundred,
broke the following records:
- On 12, he bettered his highest score at this venue, which was 11*
against Sri Lanka on 18-02-1994 (he also scored 11 against South
Africa on 10-10-1996). *On 80, he recorded the highest score by an
Indian at this venue beating Navjot Sidhu's 79 against Sri Lanka on
18-02-1994
- On 98, he became the highest run-scorer for India against New
Zealand. He surpassed Md Azharuddin's tally of 1118 runs (ave.36.06)
in 40 matches.(Tendulkar at the end of this match has 1207 runs @
ave.48.28 in 27 matches.
- On 100, he reached his 24th ODI hundred (ninth on home soil ) *On
100, he reached his third hundred against New Zealand. He thus
equalled the tally of West Indian Gordon Greenidge (7 matches), South
African Jacques Kallis (13 matches), Pakistan's Rameez Raja (20
matches) and Saeed Anwar (23 matches), England's David Gower (24
matches) and Australia's Mark Waugh (29 matches) - most hundreds
against New Zealand.
- On 118, he achieved the highest score by an Indian captain against
New Zealand bettering his own 117 that he made at Bangalore on
14-05-1997.
- On 118, he achieved his highest score against New Zealand beating the
117 at Bangalore on 14-05-1997.
- On 121, he surpassed his highest score as captain. The previous
highest was 120 against Sri Lanka at Colombo SSC on 29-08-1999
- On 124, he reached the highest individual score by an Indian against
New Zealand obliterating Rahul Dravid's 123* at Taupo on 09-01-1999.
- On 139, he reached the highest score by any player against New
Zealand as captain putting in to shade Australia's Greg Chappell's
138* at Sydney on 25-11-1980.
- On 143, he surpassed the highest by any batsman at this venue. The
previous highest was Zimbabwe's Dave Houghton's 142 also against New
Zealand on 10-10-1987.
- On 144, he reached his highest ODI score (previous 143 against
Australia at Sharjah on 22-04-1998
- On 146, he recorded the highest score by a right hander against New
Zealand beating West Indian Desmond Haynes' 145* at Berbice on
14-04-1985.
- On 154, he reached the highest score by an Indian captain on home
soil eclipsing Md Azharuddin's 153* against Zimbabwe at Cuttack on
09-04-1998.
- On 154, he reached the highest score for India on home soil eclipsing
Md Azharuddin's effort in above match
- On 170, he reached the highest score by any batsman against New
Zealand beating South African Dave Callaghan's 169* at Centurion on
11-12-1994.
- On 176, he reached the highest score by an Indian captain - home or
away bettering Kapil Dev's 175* against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on
18-06-1983.
- On 182, he reached the highest score by a captain in ODI history. The
previous highest was 181 by West Indian Viv Richards' 181 against Sri
Lanka at Karachi on 13-10-1987.
- On 184, he reached the highest score by any Indian in ODIs beating
Saurav Ganguly's 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999.
- Tendulkar's innings is the fourth highest in ODI history. Only
Saeed Anwar's 194, Viv Richards' 189* and Gary Kirsten's 188* exceed
Tendulkar's effort.
- Now only Australia's David Boon (1305 runs in 39 matches @ 39.54)
and Mark Waugh (1301 runs in 27 matches @ 54.20) have scored more
runs than Tendulkar against New Zealand.
- This was Tendulkar's 68th fifty plus score (24 hundreds and 44
fifties) in ODIs which puts him ahead of Sri Lanka's Aravinda
De Silva who has 67 fifty plus scores on his name. Now only
West Indian Desmond Haynes with 74 such scores (17 hundreds
and 57 fifties) is ahead of Tendulkar.
- Tendulkar became the fifth Indian to carry his bat through a
complete innings after Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Ravi Shastri, Manoj
Prabhakar and Saurav Ganguly.
- India's total (376-2) is the second highest team total in ODIs.
Only Sri Lanka's 398-5 against Kenya at Kandy on 06-03-1996
exceeds India's effort. India's previous highest was 373-6
against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999.
- The total also exceeds the highest made against New Zealand which
was 328-2 by Pakistan at Sharjah on 20-04-1994.
- It is also the highest total ever achieved in a ODI on Indian
soil. The previous record was 349-9 by New Zealand at Rajkot
on 05-11-99.
- The 331 run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid
surpassed many records which are listed here:
- On 89, they surpassed the highest second wicket partnership for India
against New Zealand on home soil which was 88 runs (unbroken) between
Sunil Gavaskar and M Azharuddin at Nagpur on 31-10-1987.
- On 108, they surpassed the highest partnership for the second wicket
at this venue. The previous highest was 107 runs between Geoff Marsh
and Dean Jones for Australia against England on 19-10-1989
- On 128, they surpassed the highest second wicket partner- ship for
India against New Zealand beating the previous record stand of 127
between Md Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar at Dunedin on 12-03-1992.
- On 170, they recorded the highest partnership for India for any
wicket against New Zealand beating the 169 run- partnership for the
first wicket between Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar at Bangalore
on 14-05-1997.
- On 186, they surpassed the highest partnership for any wicket at this
venue. The previous best was the 185 run-partnership between Graham
Gooch and Wayne Larkins for England against Australia on 19-10-1989.
- On 237, they reached the highest partnership for the second wicket in
Indian sub-continent obliterating the previous record stand of 236
between Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid also for second wicket against
Sri Lanka at Nagpur on 22-03-1999.
- On 264, they surpassed the previous best in ODIs for any wicket against
New Zealand which was 263 between Pakistan's Aamir Sohail and Inzamam-ul-Haq
at Sharjah on 20-04-1994.
- On 276, they reached the highest partnership for any wicket on the Indian
sub-continent. The previous record stand was of 275 (unbroken) runs between
Md Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja for fourth wicket against Zimbabwe at Cuttack
on 09-04-1998.
- On 319, they surpassed the highest partnership for any wicket in ODIs.
The previous highest was 318-run partnership between Saurav Ganguly and
Rahul Dravid also for second wicket against Sri Lanka at Taunton on
26-05-1999.
- Rahul Dravid scored his seventh hundred in his 105th match. Now only
Sachin Tendulkar (24) and Saurav Ganguly (8) have scored more ODI hundreds
than Dravid for India, while Azharuddin also has a tally of 7 hundreds.
- This was Dravid's highest score in ODIs. His previous highest was
145 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999.
- Dravid has now scored 1713 runs in 40 matches (ave.47.58) in the
calendar year 1999. Only fellow team-mate Sachin Tendulkar has
aggregated more runs in a calendar year than Dravid - 1894
runs in 34 matches in 1998 (ave.65.31)
- Chris Drum by conceding the 85 runs off his bowling achieved the
dubious distinction of conceding most runs in a nine-over
spell in ODIs. Kenya's Martin Suji had also conceded 85 runs
in his 9 overs against Sri Lanka at Kandy on 06-03-1996.
- Drum's figures are the most expensive by a bowler against
India. Pakistan's Ata-ur-Rahman (at Sharjah on 15-04-1996) had
also conceded 85 runs but that performance had come in a 10-
over spell.
- Drum's figures are second most expensive by a New Zealander in a
ODI. The record, however is held by Martin Snedden, who
conceded 105 runs in his 12 overs against England at The Oval
on 09-06-1983.
- Tendulkar, when he caught Spearman, completed 75 catches in his
226th match. He became only the second Indian after Md
Azharuddin (153 catches in 323 matches) to do so.
- The 46 run-partnership between Scott Styris and Chris Drum is New
Zealand's highest for the tenth wicket against India. The
previous highest was of 28 runs between Richard Hadlee and
Ewan Chatfield at Adelaide on 25-01-1986. It is also the
second highest for New Zealand for the tenth wicket against
all countries after the 65 run-partnership between Martin
Snedden and Ewan Chatfield against Sri Lanka at Derby on
18-06-1983.
- This is the second highest partnership for the tenth wicket
against India after the 71 run-partnership between Andy
Roberts and Joel Garner for West Indies at Manchester on
09-06-1983.
- The victory margin of 174 runs is the highest for India in terms
of runs. India has previously beaten Sri Lanka by 157 runs at
Taunton on 26-05-1999.
- It is also the worst defeat inflicted over New Zealand in ODIs in
terms of runs. Australia had beaten New Zealand by 150 runs at
Christchurch on 04-03-1990.
- Tendulkar won the MoM award for the 35th time in his career.
