SA A team selections show selectors thinking
Trevor Chesterfield - 22 November 1999

Centurion: World Cup squad members Nicky Boje, Alan Dawson and Derek Crookes as well as the recall of Roger Telemachus to the South Africa A team's ranks shows that the national selectors are thinking forward to the international limited-overs scene well in advance.

Although Crookes and Dawson did not play in the event and Boje did, the Free State all-rounder was left out of the side which went to Nairobi and his recall for the three limited-overs matches against Sri Lanka A, with the first game starting tomorrow in Chatsworth, does show the selectors have managed to get this particular team's mix right for a change.

Telemachus has forced his way into the team on the strength of his form since joining Western Province. He played for the SA A team when it toured England in 1996 and against West Indies A when they toured South Africa in 1997/98.

Mornantau Hayward's selection may come as a surprise but chances are he will only be called to join the senior squad if there are still doubts about Allan Donald after his fitness trial at the Wanderers tomorrow.

South Africa A play three limited-overs games against Sri Lanka A: at Chatsworth on Wednesday, in Paarl on Friday and at Newlands on Sunday.

The South Africa squad is: Dale Benkenstein (capt), Mark Bruyns, Nicky Boje, Neil McKenzie, Ashwell Prince, Justin Kemp, Pieter Strydom, Nic Pothas, Derek Crookes, Victor Mpitsang, Mornantau Hayward, Roger Telemachus, Alan Dawson
