ICC forms partnership with United Nations

At a joint media conference today in the United Nations Delhi centre, the creation of a new partnership between the International Cricket Council and the United Nations was announced.

ICC President Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya said "As part of cricket's globalisation program, we are delighted to be associated with the truly global body, the United Nations.

"Cricket is renowned as the 'gentleman's game' where all matches are not only governed by rules but also by the spirit of cricket. The phrase 'It's not cricket' is known over the world and emphasises fair play.

"There are many similarities in the values both cricket and the UN hold and we look forward to working closely together."

Mr Dalmiya also announced that the first ICC Cricket Week will be held from 2 - 9 April 2000. He said "The inspiration for a global week dedicated to cricket came through the various commemorative days and weeks established by the United Nations.

"Cricket Week will be a central part of the ICC Development Program with a range of high profile and grass-roots cricket activities staged and televised all over the world".

Further details of Cricket Week will be announced progressively in coming weeks.

Mr Shashi Tharoor, Director of Communications and Special Projects, Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said "Cricket is an ideal vehicle to promote the values and principles for which the United Nations stands.

"We too are looking to have a long innings with the ICC and to being closely associated with Cricket Week'.
