Pakistan Reserves trounce Karachi B by an innings 19 October 1999
Karachi, Oct 18: Pakistan Reserves humbled former Quaid-i-Azam Trophy winners Karachi Blues by an innings and 28 runs with more than four sessions to spare at the National Stadium here on Monday. The home team requiring 233 to make the Reserves team bat again were bundled out for 205 in 49.5 overs at tea despite a gutsy 86-run last wicket partnership in 48 minutes between Wasim Naeem and Anwar Ali. Wasim threw caution to the winds to hammer a quickfire 69 off 72 balls. His highly entertaining and net innings was punctuated with 13 sizzling boundaries. Anwar Ali's contribution remained 12 after he had joined hands with Wasim with Karachi Blues reeling at 121 for nine. Scores: Karachi Blues: 213 and 205 Pakistan Reserves: 446 for nine declared. If it was paceman Yasir Arafat who destroyed Karachi's first innings with six for 53, it was wrist spinner Danish Kaneria who demolished the home team's second innings. Danish, who played the National Juniors Cup for Karachi, captured five wickets for 80 runs. His figures don't truly reflect the skills he showed as they were spoiled by Wasim Naeem who stroked some delightful drives on the off side. However, Danish had the last laugh when he had Wasim stumped by wicket-keeper Atiquz Zaman. Danish also settled his scores with Jaffar Qureshi when he disturbed the symmetry of the left-handers stumps a ball after being hit for a six over his head. Danish spun the Karachi middle-order out after Yasir Arafat created the initial inroads by dismissing Kashif Iqbal, Imran Umer and Mohammad Shakeel to finish the match with figures of eight for 103 from 23 overs. It was yet another poor batting performance from the Karachi batsmen on a wicket which had no demons at all. Karachi batsmen appeared in a hurry as they, instead of grafting their innings, tried to play their strokes as soon as they took the crease. Out of the five top order batsmen, three (Imran Khan, Mohammad Shakeel and Mansoor Khan) were caught behind the wickets - two by the wicket-keeper and one at backward point - while Kashif Iqbal offered a return catch to Yasir Arafat and Imran Umer was adjudged right in front of the wickets. Earlier, Pakistan Reserves, resuming their first innings on the penultimate day at 437 for seven, added seven more runs to their overnight score in less than 15 minutes of play to declare at 446 for nine. Atiquz Zaman, who also plays for Karachi along side Danish Kaneria, failed to add any score to his last evening's 81. He fell victim to Abdul Mateen who also picked up the wicket of Kashif Raza to finish with two for 79. Atiq's 81 included eight hits to the fence. He faced 145 balls during his 26 minutes over two hours of batting. Pakistan Reserves, who secured seven maximum points for a well deserved victory, leave for Faisalabad on Tuesday where they face the hosts at the Iqbal Stadium from Oct 23.
