The season’s showpiece of Under-15 cricket is a battle of two St. Peter schools.

Alexandra and Coleridge and Parry may be less than two miles apart and regard themselves of kindred spirit, but nothing less than a tough contest is expected.

After all, the Cable and Wireless BET trophy is arguably the most coveted prize in schools cricket.

The three-day final, which draws the faithful every year, starts today at the BET Sports Club ground, Wildey.

Alexandra, who topped Zone A with 59 points, have in their ranks top wicket-taker Kirk Broomes, whose 60 wickets were instrumental in their march to the final. He has also contributed important runs.

The side includes Kirk Edwards, who represented Barbados in the recent West Indies Under-15 Championship.

Coleridge and Parry also have a national Under-15 representative, Prince Parris.

The Zone B winners (43 points) also have a useful bowling attack led by Ryan Thorpe and Derwin Worrell.

Both teams are claiming all-round strength as their main weapon.

Alexandra, who are gradually building up a cricket tradition after having been an all-girls school until 1984, have yet to win the title. They were losing finalists in 1989.

Coleridge and Parry have won the title twice since the BET sponsorship began in 1986 – the inaugural year and in 1991.

Many eyes will be on the weather. Rain so disrupted the final last year that it forced a replay for the first time in history.

The ground staff at BET said yesterday that if there was no rain overnight or this morning, the match should begin on time at noon.
