Inquiry commission hearing postponed The Dawn - 9 September 1999
Lahore, Sept 8: Hearing in the inquiry commission scheduled for Wednesday was postponed to Sept 11 (Saturday) because Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum was indisposed. Again the same four Test cricketers namely, Rashid Latif, Basit Ali, Majid Khan (also former PCB chief executive) and Sarfaraz Nawaz have been summoned by the commission to appear on Saturday. Advocates of the accused Test cricketers want to cross examine the above- named cricketers. On Wednesday, Sarfaraz Nawaz came to appear in the court. High Court registrar Abdul Salam Khawar confirmed that Test wicketkeeper/batsman Rashid Latif had sent a request to the commission to give him two weeks because he wanted to engage a lawyer and set his record in order for the appearance in it in the next hearing. However, the learned judge has again summoned him to appear on September 11. While replying to a question, the registrar said that he had no intimation about Basit Ali and Majid Khan. He said that Majid Khan might have come to the court and gone back after hearing about the indisposition of the judge. However, he had not contacted him. Abdul Salam Khawar confirmed that Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum was keen to finish the inquiry as early as possible but it was necessary to give the accused persons chances to cross examine the accusers. After that there would be arguments by the advocates on behalf of their clients. Thereafter, the report would be finalised and sent to the President of Pakistan Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, who was also the patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Former captain Wasim Akram is represented by advocate Khawaja Ahmad Tariq Rahim, Salim Malik by advocate Azmat Saeed and both Mushtaq Ahmad and Waqar Younis by Muzammil Khan. Pakistan Cricket Board is represented by Ali Sibtain Fazli and his junior Ali Sajjad. The registrar said that some sealed files and all the other record was lying with the judge of the inquiry commission Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum. He needed time to go through the complete record and thereafter submit his report to the President of Pakistan. Source: Dawn Editorial comments can be sent to Dawn at webmaster@dawn.com |
