The Barbados Nation All at stake on final BET day
Philip Spooner - 10 September 1999

Alexandra 309-6 dec, Coleridge and Parry 27-1

Both teams have all to play for today, the final day of the Cable & Wireless BET Under-15 cricket final at Wildey, St. Michael.

That all is first innings lead and the winner’s trophy. Coleridge and Parry require a further 283 runs, while Alexandra need another nine wickets.

Coleridge and Parry, two-time champions, will depend heavily on captain Prince Parris, a Barbados Under-15 player, who was unbeaten on one as his side closed the day on 27 for one. He will, however, be wary of Alexandra’s bowlers, who sent down 26 accurate overs late in the afternoon after declaring on a very good total.

With Parris is Ryan Thorpe, whose eight runs have taken him 84 minutes. All 13 runs from the bat have come in singles with the other 14 in extras.

Leg-spinner Ramon Goodman and off-spinner Romain Rollock have looked dangerous, with Rollock sending back opener Omar Phillips, via an lbw decision which created some debate.

The day belonged to Alexandra’s batsmen, who continued their dominance from the first-day position of 123 for one. Once again, Jamal Smith (55) and captain Kirk Edwards (92) showed much patience in extending their second-wicket stand to 98.

It ended when the bespectacled Smith, for the only time in his four-hour vigil, swung across the line and was lbw. Edwards, a national teammate of Parris, crafted an innings which belied his youth.

Full of patience, good judgement and perfect shot selection, the tall right-hander faced 235 balls before falling eight short of a deserved century, when Parris held a low catch. Edwards’ dismissal came after he asked that a car be removed from the northern end.

The reflection from the windscreen was causing some discomfort, but immediately on resumption, Edwards departed.

The stage was set for Barrington Yearwood to unleash his repertoire of strokes and the little left-hander thrilled the crowd.

He hit straight and clean for four boundaries in a 57-ball knock which propelled Alexandra to a declaration.

At tea (245 for 3) he was 35 in just 30 minutes and had already helped Edwards add 49 for the fourth wicket. After the break Yearwood kept motoring on as Edwards solidified the team’s determined effort.

It was a brief bit of entertainment for the crowd on a day that was slow and low-keyed. It can be so different today.
