Samoa: Good year for Samoan cricket in 2000
Jim Dunlop - 17 December 2000
The Samoa Cricket Association has had two very good competitions.
The first one of six teams started in March and was eventually won by MC
International.
There was then a gap in the season because International Rugby was played at
Apia Park for four consecutive Saturdays.
Another competition was then held with eight teams - Apia won this. In October, a Samoan team from Auckland came and SCA held a four team Round Robin competition.
The competition had many visitors from other countries in the local teams.
The Auckland team had very fast bowlers and good middle order batsmen. They were not very good in the field. Two of our best players were 31 degrees and 91% moisture. These guys beat most visiting teams.
A Samoan team was selected to play in the Pacifica Cup competition in Auckland in February:
Rapi Ieremia (Captain), Sinalamea Laumea (Vice-Captain), Iosua Toilolo,
Viliane Eli, Robert Barlow, Peter Poulos, Gerhard Tuiletufuga, Paletasala
Atonio, Geoffrey Clarke, Vao Pio, Dean Seuoti, Edward Annandale, Filipaina
Anesone; Manager - Paul Meyer; Seb Kohlhase
Our local competition has now stopped for two reasons:
- people leave to go overseas during the Christmas holidays
- the wet season has arrived with a vengeance.
So it is closedown for this year.
Merry Christmas,
