England v West Indies, Test 1 Day 3 - Close
Colin Croft - 17 June 2000

The fat lady tuned up early in the game, perhaps when the West Indies led on the 2nd day bu 157, but only started singing at 6:15pm on the 3rd afternoon, for it was then that the West Indies won their 1st Test match away from home since February 1997, when they beat Australia at Perth.

Reon King, who had had a poor match so far, came into his own after tea on Day 3. After being dispatched for 04 by Andy Flintoff, King immediately bowled Flintoff with a tremendously quick off-cutter that kept a bit low. Flintoff had made 12 aggressive runs but was not good enough to last long enough; England 78-6 in over 29.

Wavell Hinds then took a "blinder", a wonderful reflex catch at forward short leg, from Robert Croft's bat, off the bowling of King. Croft had made only 1; England 83-7.

Andy Caddick went the same way, caught at short-leg by Hinds from Rose's bowling this time, a much easier catch, but a controversial one. Like the catch to dismiss Jimmy Adams earlier in the day, television replays left doubt as to whether the catch was correctly taken. Caddick out for 4; England 94-8.

The final two wickets took some time to be had, and captain Jimmy Adams had to do the business himself, helped by Wavell Hinds, who took a third catch at forward short-leg, this time to dismiss Nick Knight who had played rather well for his 34. He is badly placed in the England batting line-up and should be promoted. England were then 117-9 in over 53.

Adams then performed the coup-de-grace as he bowled Ed Giddings for 00, and Darren Gough was left not out on 23. England all out for 125. The West Indies had won the 1st Test by an innings and 93 runs.

Courtney Walsh was again the best bowler for the West Indies, getting 3-22 from 19 overs, giving him match figures of 8-58 from 40 overs. Reon King finished with 3-28 in the 2nd innings. Courtney Walsh was easily, and deservedly, the "Man of the Match."

The West Indies now go to Lords with their tails in the air. England have got to make some adjustments. It is West Indies 1; England 0.
