Bahamas: Regular season preview & pre-season review
28 June 2000

The Bahamas cricket season is in full swing. Greg Taylor reviews what's happened and previews what's to come:

"The Bahamas Cricket Association's season started on May 29, 2000 with the Gerald Isaacs 40 over tournament.

Teams entered for the tournament were T Bird CC, Paradise CC, Commonwealth CC, Superstars CC, St.Agnes CC and the Associaiton's defending champion, Police CC. The competition was strong with all of the teams playing exciting cricket.

The semifinal match between Police and Superstars went down to the last ball with one run needed to win the match. Prematch predictions saw Police who were expected to be far too talented for Superstars. They may well have been except for a 16 year old boy who dug in deeply and held on to his wicket enabling Superstars to win. Scores: Police 209-9 lost to Superstars 210-9 by one wicket.

The Championship match was won by T Bird behind the bowling of Prad Maraj, an unknown who wrecked the Superstars batting with some off-spin. Final Score: T Bird 217-6 Superstars 148 all-out

The regular season got underway June 10. One of the players to watch in this year's competition are Whitcliff Atkinson from Superstars, who on Fathers Day, June 10, scored 129 runs not out against T Bird.

This is a talented young man who can score a ton of runs if he can settle down at the wicket. He is also a useful bowler and captain of Superstars. He needs lots of luck with that team.

From Paradise CC you have have Gary Armstrong the opening fast bowler, who at only 5ft 4 is pretty quick for his size. There is also his brother, Llewellyn, who can score runs and bowl well. Both of them are excellent in the field.

There is also Evison Worrell, the other opening bowler, who can move the ball in and out at will.

Commonwealth has doctors Harry Singh and Robin Permashwar who can score runs. The bowling is a little weak.

St.Agnes CC has the talented cousins from Sri Lanka, Shamaka Perera and Narindra Ekanyoke. These two are awesome when batting with the latter being left-handed and bowls leg breaks. This team is made up of young boys with few adults.

T Bird has Howard Roye, an opening batsman who likes to hit the ball hard. He can score runs in a hurry and is also a spinner who can bowl leg or off break. They also possess Ralston Myles, another hard hitting middle order batsman who can score runs easily.

From the Police CC you have Dwight Wheatly, an opening batsman who bats right and bowls left handed. He needs to have a little more patience when batting. There's also Greg Taylor, the number three batsman who led the team to the championship with some find batting against T Bird and Paradise. By the way, the Police is celebrating fifty (50) years as a team in the Association this year. The Police has batting from one to eleven along with the bowling. They should repeat as champions this year

Now on a sad note. The venerable Archdeacon, William Thompson, Chaplain and the driving force behind cricket in the Bahamas died on June 23 in hospital. This was a result of gunshot wounds received from an intruder who entered his home in the early hours of the morning demanding money.

The Archdeacon had just retired as rector and was devoting his time to the development of cricket in the Bahamas. He will be missed by all in the Bahamas and the Association."

Teams Bahamas.
