Rumour, Gossip and Innuendo
Tony Munro - 27 March 2000

*As expected, the ICC's Development Officer for the Americas region, Mr. John Shepherd, has announced his resignation.

Mr. Shepherd informed officials of ICC member countries in the region this week.

The timing of the completion of Mr. Shepherd's term and the naming of his replacement is not known to 'Beyond The Test World' at this stage.

His departure comes at a pivotal time as officials from Canada, the United States, Argentina and the Cayman Islands are working towards the formation of a continental association.

Further progress is not expected until Mr. Shepherd's successor assumes his role.

Some officials have expressed a desire for the position to be relocated to North America. The four other continental Development Officers are based in the offices of a Test member in that region.

*The Papua-New Guinea Cricket Board of Control will appoint former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield player, Errol Harris, as national coach in the near future.

His term is expected to extend until the end of the ICC Trophy in Canada in July, 2001 and will also cover its paricipation in November's ACC Trophy and the proposed Pacific nations tournament in January.

Harris has filled the position previously and his local knowledge was cnnsidered a key factor in the PNGCBC decision.

The PNGCBC received applications for the position from as far away as England

*The ill-fated Gulf Cup is now likely to be held in November, tournament organiser, Mr. Hatyar Khan, said this week.

The tournament has been plagued by postponements, due chiefly to complications with the sponsor, Farmers.

*From the official Irish Cricket Union site comes the news that "this season's European Club Championship, scheduled to be held once again at Limavady, Northern Ireland, has been cancelled.

The European Cricket Council has been unsuccessful in persuading more countries to become involved in the tournament which Limavady has won for the last two seasons."

It had been hoped to make the tournament more inclusive after last year's event involved the champions of five countries (Ireland, Sweden, France, Spain and Israel).

This is a low participation rate considering competition cricket is also played in Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Greece.

*ICC Associate member, France, lost to ICC Affiliate member, Malta in both 'One Day Internationals' played on the island last week.

Malta scrambled home by one wicket in the first game, before winning by a more decisive eight wicket margin in the second match.
