India defeat West Indies in warm-up game
2 October 2000

A big crowd at the Ruaraka Sports Club in Nairobi saw India complete a six-wicket victory over the West Indies yesterday in a warm-up match. If the local fans were eagerly anticipating some batting fireworks from Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, then they would have been let down because neither was the star of the day.

Lara made a duck in the West Indies total of 170 for 4, falling victim to Venkatesh Prasad, who took 3/27. Reports indicate that young Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan impressed yesterday. Indian captain Sourav Ganguly decided to demote himself to number seven in the batting order, but he was not required in the end. Vinod Kambli, who last appeared in an ODI for India in September 1999, made 44, while uncapped eighteen year-old left-hander Yuvraj Singh was not out on 52. Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed in his twenties.
