Solanki intending to emulate Trescothick

Vikram Solanki, the stylish 24 year old from Worcestershire, is keen to emulate Marcus Trescothick and translate his limited overs opportunities into a Test career. Solanki, a middle order batsman, came into the squad as a replacement for Nick Knight, who usually opens for England in the limited overs game, but he is, as yet, unsure as to his role in the squad.

"It has been such a rush," he explained. "I have not had a chance to talk to any of The Management team about things like that yet, but in the next few days I'll talk to them about what they expect from me."

"Of course I want to play Test cricket. That is the same for every Englishman in county cricket," Solanki said. "It is the ultimate ambition."

Solanki made a troubled start to his international career on the southern Africa tour. He failed to build a decent score and his fielding slipped below its normal outstanding levels. He has yet to be given an opportunity at Test level, but feels encouraged by the example of Marcus Trescothick, who took his opportunity in the one-day game – again at the expense of the unfortunate Knight – and went on to successfully start his Test career too.

"You get these opportunities, and there is no doubt that he has made the most of it," Solanki admitted. "He has played very well ever since, and what he has done is a great example of what is possible for a young player coming into the side."
