The future of Bangladeshi cricket has been placed in the hands of a few Sri Lankan coaches, who would be looking forward to give a bit of a Lion’s touch to Asia’s newest test nation.
The four Sri Lankan coaches, Carlton Bernadus (former coach of Sri Lanka U19’s), Malcolm Perera (Director coaching of the BCCSL), Nelson Mendis and Senerath Alwis had already left the country. The coaches are all on a one-year contract that is renewable for two years.
The move was initiated by BCCSL president, Mr Thilanga Sumathipala, with the dual aim of providing opportunities to local coaches at international level, and to aid the development of the game in a country of the Asian regions.
Bernadus would have to show the results quickly when he takes up the pivotal Under 19, while Perera, Mendis and Alwis will be training the Under 17’s, 15’s and 13’s respectively.
BCCSL President Thilanga Sumathipala said: “it is a great achievement for Sri Lanka to have won the confidence of Bangladesh on the country’s coaching structure over the others in the region.” Sumathipala said the BCCSL have also agreed to introduce the Sri Lankan coaching syllabus to Bangladesh so that they would have their own accredited coaches in time to come.
Carlton Bernadus, who made a short visit to the Bangladesh prior to taking the assignment officially, is happy about the enthusiasm and the efforts of the Bangladesh Cricket Board in developing the game. In his new task as coach of U-19 Bangladesh national cricket team, Bernadus is hopeful that he would be able guide them to the final stages of the next Youth World Cup.
Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer, Roshan Mahanama, has already conducted two special training sessions as an Instructor of a special Fast Track Programme under the International Cricket Council’s Coaching Developing Programme.
