Sussex announce new overseas player Sussex CCC Media Release - 3 October 2000
Sussex CCC are pleased to announce that they will be signing 27 year old, former Zimbabwean Test Player, Murray Goodwin for the 2001 season. Although born in Zimbabwe Murray has played most of his cricket in Perth since moving to Australia as a 13 year old. He averaged 61.14 in five Sheffield Shield matches for Western Australia last winter and made Test centuries against both the West Indies and England earlier this year before making the decision to retire from international cricket to move back to Perth. A right-hand batsman, and occasional right-arm medium/leg break bowler, he comes to Sussex with a proven, quality record at First Class level. David Gilbert, Chief Executive, spoke highly of Sussex's latest acquisition: "Since Michael Bevan told us he would be unavailable next year the search has been on in earnest to find his replacement. It was well known that Murray was keen to play County cricket and his retirement from Tests made him an even more valuable player. His excellent performances in the Test and One Day series this summer emphasise what a terrific signing he is for us." Murray will arrive in the UK in early April.
