Injury to Giles worries England in warm up Staff and agencies - 3 October 2000
Ashley Giles had to leave the field injured during England's warm up match before the ICC KnockOut. England are taking on Australia at the Simba Union ground in Nairobi where Giles had just completed a fine return catch to dismiss the prolific Bevan when he limped off. He had only bowled 5 balls. A calf injury has been diagnosed, and a minimum 24 hours rest demanded. Australia scored 236 in their innings, though with all 14 squad players taking part at some stage the result should not be taken too seriously. Captain Steve Waugh, so often the nemesis of England, struck a 39 ball 50 before retiring to give other players the opportunity to find their form. Andy Caddick looked to be in fine fettle with the wickets of Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting in an opening spell of seven overs for 19 runs, Giles' injury is particularly significant with all sides expecting the pitches to turn in the tournament. He has been 12th man for England often during his career, but if he can regain full fitness is likely to be a key member of this side. Robert Croft is on standby if Giles fails to recover shortly. © CricInfo Ltd.
