Umpires S Venkataraghavan and Peter Willey officiated in their 31st and 19th match respectively.
Kerry Jeremy (born 06-02-1980, right hand batsman and right arm fast medium bowler) and Marlon Samuels (born 05-02-1981, right hand batsman and right arm off break bowler) made their debut for West Indies. They became the 102nd and 103rd player to represent West Indies in ODIs.
Sherwin Campbell led West Indies in place of injured Jimmy Adams. He became the 15th player to captain West Indies in ODIs.
The third wicket partnership of 160 runs between Avishka Gunawerdene and Mahela Jayawerdene is Sri Lanka's best for this wicket against West Indies in all matches. This obliterates the previous record stand of 80 runs between Hashan Tillekeratne and Aravinda DeSilva at Colombo RP on 16-12-1993.
The stand is also the best for the third wicket on this ground beating the previous best of 132 between Zimbabwe's Andy Flower and Guy Whittall against Kenya on 12-10-1997.
Gunawerdene made his maiden ODI century in his 19th match. His innings is the highest by any batsman against West Indies beating Pakistan's Saeed Anwar's 131 at Sharjah on 01-11-1993. Incidentally the previous highest individual innings for Sri Lanka against West Indies made by Hashan Tillekeratne who made 104 at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium on 09-11-1993.
Gunawerdene's 19 fours is a new record for Sri Lanka. Romesh Kaluwitharana (v Kenya at Nairobi Gymkhana on 28-09-1996 during his innings of 100*) and Sanath Jayasuriya (v India at Mumbai Wankhede on 17-05-1997 during his innings of 151) had scored 17 fours each. This is also a new record against West Indies beating England's Graham Gooch's record of 17 fours during his knock of 129* at Port-of-Spain on 04-03-1986.
Sri Lanka's total (287 for six) is its second highest against West Indies. The highest still remains as 329 allout at Sharjah on 16-10-1995.
By conceding just 9 runs in his 10-over spell, Muttiah Muralitharan (10-4-9-0) recorded the most economical 10-over spell by a Sri Lankan in ODIs. This obliterates Chaminda Vaas' figures of 10-3-13-2 against India at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium on 17-05-1997.
Muralitharan's figures are also the most economical by a bowler against West Indies alongwith Australia's Mick Malone who had figures of 10-5-9-2 at Melbourne on 10-01-1982.
The seventh wicket stand of 74 runs between Laury Williams and Nagamootoo is West Indies' best for this wicket against Sri Lanka.
The victory margin of 108 runs is the biggest for Sri Lanka against West Indies. The previous record margin for Sri Lanka was 50 runs at Sharjah on 20-10-1995.
Gunawerdene won his second Man of the Match award.
