WP club cricket kicks off Otto Langenegger - 6 October 2000
All MTN leagues get underway with 2-day fixtures commencing on Saturday 7 October. In the 1A UCT (runners-up in the recent National Club Championships) will begin the defence of their title with a Home match against Montrose, while newcomers United and Langa will begin their campaigns in the higher league with away matches against Bellville and Pinelands respectively. It is rumoured that ex-Zimbabwean Neil Johnson, W.P.’s foreign signing, has joined Cape Tech-Green Point, whose first outing is Away against Techs. The other 1A matches (Home teams first) are; Alma vs CTCC and Claremont vs Victoria. Fixtures in all the other leagues will soon appear there too, as will updated logs in the course of the season. A total of 254 teams will be participating in senior league cricket this season. MTN NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The University of Cape Town, WP Club Championships in 1999/2000, lost by 4 wickets to Boksburg C.C Easterns in the final of the MTN National Club Championships in Centurion on 25th September. UCT reached the final by topping the section of the competition, defeating the University of Potchefstroom (North West Province) Old Boys (Northern Titans) and Berea (KZN) and losing to the Free State University in the process.
REGIONAL CLUB COMPETITION:
Three regional club teams together with the WP Superjuice Academy will be participating in a Round Robin competition under lights at Newlands during the second half of the season. The zonal teams will be chosen by the provincial selectors and the competition will be played according to Standard Bank Cup rules, will be matches to take place on Fridays, commencing at 16h30
