Despite fine weather in Colombo, play was only possible in one off the Under 23 Quarter Finals. All the grounds, with the exception of P.Sara, were still waterlogged after the deluge the previous day.
Sinhalese Sports Club gained an early lead on bonus points when they bowled out Nondescript Cricket Club for 137 runs in the Under 23 cricket tournament quarter final match played at P Sara Stadium. The match got underway at 1.00 p.m. after play was delayed due to heavy rain the day before.
SSC won the toss, asked NCC to bat first. Suresh Perera (4/40) struck early when he trapped Johannes Jayasuriya(03) LBW in the fifth over. NCC recovered with a 39 run stand for the second wicket, the highest of the innings, before losing both Kalum Fernando(15) and Susantha Pradeep (18) on 46. Wickets then started to tumble at regular intervals and NCC were restricted to 137 runs in 59 overs.
But the NCC bowlers fought back before the close, nipping out Ian Daniels for just one run in the fifth over. The umpires called off play for the day at 6pm.
Speaking to CricInfo after the match, Pradeep Hewage, the NCC captain, said: “We need to go out and play well tomorrow, that is the only way we can qualify for the next round.”
Anura Tennakoon, the coach of SSC, felt his team stood a good chance of qualifying having bowled the opposition out for 137. “But it all depends on how the weather is going to be like tomorrow, and we were fortunate to have the game going although it started late.”
If play does not get underway tomorrow in the three other games then Nett Points will determine who progresses through to the semi-finals.
