Atherton scotches contract rumours Staff & Agencies - 11 October 2000
Michael Atherton has scotched rumours that he has rejected a new contract at Lancashire and that, as a consequence, his retirement may be imminent. There had been reports that the opening batsman may retire from first class cricket at the end of next season after suggestions that a new contract had been turned down. "I have not rejected any offer of a new contract from Lancashire," Atherton stated this morning. "I am happy to see out the remaining year of my contract. The club are totally supportive of this and all options will be considered at the conclusion of my current deal in 2001." Atherton first played for Lancashire in 1987, but recently hinted in an interview with the New Statesman that he may pack it in after next season. Although still only 32 years old he has been troubled by back problems for some time. Lancashire chairman Jack Simmons said: "He has put matters on hold. There is talk of retiring, but I can't see him packing up." A spokesman for Lancashire added: "No discussion or offers have been made in respect of a contract extension."
