Rico's 9/8 wreck St.Margaret's 12 October 2000
Almost single-handedly, Rico Carter bowled his school, St. Catherine’s Primary, to a ten-wicket victory over St. Margaret’s Primary in the Piton Malta Herman Griffith Memorial Cricket Competition yesterday. The 11-year-old right arm medium fast bowler was in untouchable form with the ball, capturing nine wickets for eight runs in a mere five overs as his school skittled out St. Margaret’s for a meagre 14 runs. Carter said the pitch was soft and did not offer much assistance. 'I just had to keep the ball at the stumps and keep it up,' a smiling Carter said yesterday after the phenomenal performance. He also scored six of the team’s runs and hopes to score '500 runs for the season and take more wickets'. St. Catherine’s coach Trevor Alleyne said this year is the best chance St. Catherine have of making it to the semi-finals as they were one of the strongest teams in Zone 1. Defending champions St. Giles set their sights on doing the double and started on a winning note, defeating St. Matthew’s Primary by four runs in a home game at Blenheim. St. Giles made a modest 48 in 19.2 overs, with Rapheal King being the only batsman in double figures with ten. Shoneko Bowen led the bowling attack for St. Matthew’s by taking four wickets for 14 runs. The St. Giles bowling attack was equal to the task, however, reducing St. Matthew’s to 44 in only 13.3 overs. Rico Goodridge and Miguel Headley were the chief destroyers, each taking three wickets. The day’s biggest scored came at Passage Road, St. Michael, where Wesley Hall pounded the bowling of neighbours Westbury Primary to make 126. Ralson Clarke just missed a half-century, making 46, and got good support from Don Gill, who made 25. Westbury had no answer in trying to reach the huge total, falling for 42, as Wesley Hall’s seamer Akil Dowridge confused their bats to take five wickets, conceding only nine runs. Another high-scoring match was at Dover Pasture, where St. Christopher defeated St. Patrick’s by six wickets in a clash of Christ Church schools. St. Patrick’s made what appeared at the time to be a very respectable 100, with Kemar Harte scoring his first half-ton of the tournament, making 51. But St. Christopher Primary made the going look easy, reaching the target and losing only four wickets in the process. It was balanced batting effort, led by Gabriel Layne (25 not out, Mark Bridgeman (18), and Akram Headley (15).
