The Barbados Nation Bajans Told: Beat Ball
14 October 2000

Kingston: William Bourne wants to see a more urgent approach by Barbados’ batsmen in spite of their unblemished record after the half-way stage in the preliminaries of the Red Stripe Bowl.

The team coach’s comments come against the background that Barbados desperately struggled to maintain a decent scoring rate in their second-round match against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

'We need to bat a little bit faster at times to be able to pick up the ones and twos and keep a good rate going,' Bourne told the Saturday Sun.

'We have to start taking a few more chances, improvise a little more. There were half-volleys which were pushed back to the bowlers.'

'We have batsmen who can score freely but we’ve had in the two games so far a couple of them not being able to take advantage.'

The most glaring case was with teenaged left-hander Ryan Hinds, who was buckled down to the extent that he could manage only 18 runs off 91 balls against Trinidad and Tobago’s varied spin quartet.

While Hinds was going through his misery, almost 24 overs went by in which he hardly played an aggressive stroke.

By the time he was dismissed, almost 41 of the 50 overs were completed and Barbados could only raise 138 for six.

Bourne, however, said a slow pitch and an even more sluggish outfield at Chedwin Park were factors that contributed to the slow scoring.

The tempo only increased in the closing overs when Ian Bradshaw and debutant Callitos Lopez smacked 45 runs from 40 balls that allowed Barbados to post a respectable total of 185.

Bourne was satisfied with Bradshaw’s all-round performance and the continued good batting form of Floyd Reifer, who followed up in 69 against Canada in the opening match with a solid 49 against Trinidad and Tobago.

Bradshaw’s run-a-ball 26 against Trinidad and Tobago was followed by an incisive spell of left-arm medium fast bowling in which he took three wickets for 12 runs to pave the way for a 67-run victory.

'Apart from his batting, where he came in and speeded up things for us, he came back with the new ball and ripped the heart out of them. He bowled extremely well,'Bourne said.

The coach still feels a couple of the bowlers are not yet spot-on.

'We also need to keep a tighter line and length. One or two bowlers are still straying a bit,' Bourne said.

It should not come as a surprise, however, if Hinds is asked to make way for either Antonio Mayers or Dale Richards.

Mayers would seem to be the preferred choice since in addition to his batting, he gives the team another option as a medium-pace bowler.
