Panadura spinners bowl out CCC for 149
Altaf Nawaz - 15 October 2000

Spinners, Dilruwan Perera and Amila Perera, put the skids on the strong CCC batting and restricted them to 149 runs against Panadura Sports Club in the semi final of the Under- 23 Division One tournament at Maitland Place today. At stumps Panadura SC were 68 for the loss of three wickets.

Right arm off spinner, Dilruwan Perera and Amila Perera, the left arm spinner, both bowled mesmerizing spells to run through the strong CCC batting line up. Both of them enjoyed the Nondescripts pitch, which favoured the spinners, but gave scant assistance to the seam bowlers.

CCC's skipper, Damitha Hunukumbura, after winning the toss opted to take first lease of the wicket. They had an early blow, when opener K.Ranaweera was dismissed for a duck, in the second ball of the first over of the day. However patient knocks from skipper, Hunukumbura (47) and Pubudu Seneviratne (20), steadied the innings.

Hunukumbura survived a chance when the total on 39 and his individual score on 15. Seneviratene departed first when he had scored 20 and the total was on 45. He faced 45 deliveries and hit one boundary in his innings.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals as the top and middle order batsmen gifted their wickets due to poor shot selection. They were finally bundled out ten minutes before tea for 149 runs, Hunukumbura top scoring with 47 runs from 158 balls. His innings comprised of four well-timed boundaries.

Right arm off spinner Dilruwan Perera bowled a marathon spell of 19 overs, to claim three wickets for 39 runs. His partner, Amila Perera, tightened the screws at the other end, capturing four wickets for just 26 runs.

Hemantha Devapriya, the CCC coach, was of the view that they were short of runs. But he said: " The wicket was not conducive for batting, but anything over 200 runs would have been a challenging total. We were able to post only 149 runs in a soggy out field condition. We will go all out to restrict them below that total".

In reply Panadura SC had a shaky start as three quick wickets fell for 19 runs. National cap and their skipper, Chamara Silva, steadied the innings and remained unbeaten at the close. Left arm off spinner, Nisitha Rupasinghe, accounted for two of three wickets to fall.
