Sebastanites batsmen, Nalin Wijesinghe(68) and Laknath Fernando(48), put on a third wicket stand of 96 runs, as their team recovered from earlier setbacks, to make 224 in reply to Nondescripts CC’s first innings score of 249 in the Under 23 semi-final match played at Braybrooke place. Despite surrendering the first innings points to NCC, the match remains evenly poised and an outright result possible on day three.
Resuming on their overnight score of 39 for two, the two Sebastanites batsmen batted doggedly early in the morning, before quickening the pace just prior to lunch. They scored 76 runs in the morning session.
After the lunch break, Ganegama, was soon in the action, when he dismissed Fernando for 48. Then, in the next over, Wijesinghe, survived a return catch to bowler, legspinner Malinga Bandara.
However, he was the next to go for 68, with Sebastanites total on 166 for four in the 52nd over. Thereafter wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Only Gihan Fernando (28) settled down to play well. He was eventually bowled trying to work to leg a straight delivery from Bandara.
Ganegama struck again to wrap up the Sebastanites innings for 224 in 81 overs. The fast bowler finished with five for 60. Malinga Bandara chipped in with three for 71.
At close of play NCC were three wickets down for 46 in their second innings. The not out batsmen at stumps were Suranga Gamage(13) and Visuru Chinthaka(12).
Sebastanites left arm paceman Sujeewa de Silva (3/17) claimed all three wickets to fall in the NCC innings. The first innings hero, Kelum Fernando, was sent back cheaply for three. NCC have a lead of 71, but only have seven wickets remaining, and will need to bat well tomorrow morning.
