Our Credo
BCCSL - 17 October 2000
A credo is generally accepted as a summary of the truth, of the articles of belief or any solemn profession of opinions or principles. It is with such a credo that the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka will launch its publication of "The Score", the English and Sinhala versions, as bi-monthly journals. The articles they will contain will be a profession of the truth, what the BCCSL honestly believes, credible opinions based on norms accepted by society, with the highest integrity and based on sound principles. They will not be instruments to vilify, revile, abuse or defame cricketers, cricket administrators or cricketing institutions. We hope to establish a value system for ourselves based on trustworthiness, utmost probity and goodwill.
We shall endeavour to be the vehicles of delivery of the message of cricket to the remotest villages and the remotest schools in Sri Lanka. We appreciate that the introduction of cricket and the upsurge of interest in cricket in rural Sri Lanka was engineered almost 30 years ago by those who started cricket commentaries on radio in Sinhala. This revolution of changing " playing cricket in English to playing cricket in Sinhala" as it were, was a watershed in the history of Sri Lankan cricket. The mindset changed completely. It was a revelation for rural youth that they have a place in our cricket firmament. They have responded magnificently. So much so, that they are now, the major force in all our Sri Lankan teams from under 15 years to the national team.
The contribution of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association to the development of Sri Lankan cricket cannot be quantified. During the last thirty years, with meagre resources, this association has conducted the schools under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 19 tournaments annually. There are 301 schools registered as members of the association. This has been the nursery of Sri Lanka cricket.
Every single Sri Lanka player over the last 15 years has come through this system. This is the bedrock of Sri Lanka’s success story.
"The Score" shall endeavour to be the vehicle of delivery of the message of cricket to the World especially to the nascent and small cricket playing countries, which are in the International Cricket Council’s globalisation programme. Sri Lanka’s rise from the minnows of cricket, which obtained Test status in 1981 to becoming the World Champions in 1996, is a phenomenal achievement, which will serve as inspiration and as a role model for what small nations can achieve. We shall endeavour to serve cricket at the highest levels possible.
