Underdogs, Panadura Sports Club, shattered a seven year hoodoo, when they qualified to play in the final of the Under 23 Division I cricket tournament, next week, after a convincing three wicket win over Colombo Cricket Club at Maitland Place today.

Chasing a target of 101 runs for victory, Panadura SC lost seven wickets in the chase but eventually reached the target after 33.2 overs. They last won this tournament way back in 1992/93.

The cynosure of all eyes was Panadura’s lef arm leg spinner, Amila Perera, who claimed a bag of nine wickets for 81 runs.

Resuming from the overnight score of 58 for the loss of three wickets, the CCC batsmen were tested by some testing spin bowling by Amila Perera. He finished with five wickets for 55 runs.

This gave the opponents a target of 101 runs, with almost a session to get it. After the fall of 2 early wicket for 6 runs, Amila Fernando (33) and P. Wickarama, compiled 46 runs for the 3rd wicket. Wickarama’s 56 ball innings included four boundaries. His partner, who faced 36 balls and struck one four, was content to push singles into the gaps.

However, with the score on 67, Panadura SC lost 2 quick wickets to create a tense finale. In the end, the two bowlers, Amila Perera (5) and Dilruwan Perera (11), watchfully saw their team home.

Left arm spinner, N Rupasinghe, was once again the pick of the bowlers for CCC, picking up 3 wickets for 37 runs.
