The Barbados Nation Maynard batting for a call
Philip Spooner - 17 October 2000

Banks batsman Mike Maynard has decided to hit out at the Barbados cricket selectors.

Not in a tough-talking manner, but plans to let his bat do the talking.

The flashy opening batsman, nicknamed 'Flash', wants to prove to the selectors he is no 'flash in the pan' batsman.

He blazed 85 with nine fours and a six on Sunday against Spartan in the Division 1 competition, the day after it was announced he was not part of the team for trials for the 2001 Busta Cup competition.

'I’m a bit disappointed as I was hoping to be there again,' said 24-year-old Maynard, who made his national debut against South Africa 'A' in a one-day game in late August.

'After playing against South Africa and being called to the Red Stripe Bowl trials I thought I would be there again. I am disappointed but I have to blame myself.'

Maynard said in the past he was accused of getting starts and not carrying on, but in the remaining matches this season he will be hoping to put that right.

Maybe they (selectors) think I don’t carry on enough. They probably feel I’m reckless as I don’t carry on and build big innings.

'I know my ability and I believe in myself, and I believe all I need is a break at the higher level. I know I can do it for Barbados.'

Maynard, who kept wicket for Barbados in the 1995 West Indies Under-19 competition, is still hoping for a call-up, as players have received late calls in the past.

'The season is not done yet and I can still get a late call. I still have hope, and if I get in (trials) my sights will be on playing for Barbados next year.'
