Anura Tennakoon appointed Cricket Operations Manager
Charlie Austin - 24 October 2000

Anura Tennakoon, the former Sri Lankan captain, has been appointed as the Cricket Operations Manager (COM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL). Thilanga Sumithapala, the BCCSL President, announced the appointment at a media briefing on Monday night.

Addressing the media, Sumithipala said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce to you all the appointment of Anura Tennakoon a Cricket Operations Officer of the BCCSL. The Board is delighted to have secured the services of the esteemed former captain of Sri Lanka.”

As Cricket Operations Manager, Tennakoon, will co-ordinate with the coaches attached to the Board and also handle the domestic match arrangements, including the International matches held in Sri Lanka. He will liaise directly with the national captain, Sanath Jayasuriya, and coach, Dav Whatmore, to ensure that all their cricket related requirements, such as practice and training facilities, are adequately taken care of.

Anura Tennakoon is a much-respected figure in Sri Lankan cricket. He was a brilliant right-handed batsman, superb close fielder, and bowled left arm spin. His unofficial test figures were impressive: 1792 runs at an average 48.8 in his 25 matches and five centuries.

‘Anura,’ as he is popularly known, captained Sri Lanka in 16 unofficial test matches, more than any other player until Sri Lanka achieved test status in 1982. He retired suddenly after a successful tour of England in 1979 at the tender age of 32.
