Dawn Major changes likely in PCB administration
25 October 2000

Major reshuffles in the cricket administration are in the offing following the disastrous buildup to the first one-day international between Pakistan and England, highly placed sources said.

Sources said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia took serious notice of the ticket scam and slow development work at the National Stadium.

Thousands of valid ticket-holders were deprived of watching the first ever one-day international at the National Stadium while seats of the most prestigious enclosures were hired on double the prize from the decorators.

Informed sources said the general called a senior PCB official on Tuesday morning and expressed his disappointment, anger and frustration over the way the organizers handled the project.

"He is utterly disappointed. He has lost faith in some of his people. He has indicated that he was contemplating to make changes in the (administrations) because the board a got a very negative publicity.

"The general is furious because his excellent efforts had been undone by the organizers of the match," sources said with reference to the PCB chief's personal interest in the installation of floodlights and the giant television and replay screens.

Repeated efforts were made to contact the PCB boss, but he was not available for his comments.

Although unconfirmed but it is believed that PCB manager administration, Col Pervez's attempt to hold a press conference during the dinner break was a link to the whipping the officials received from their boss.

"I want to clarify the board's position. I want to listen to their (media's) grievances and try to remove the communication gap," he told a journalist.

However, he later backed out from the conference idea, perhaps on the recommendation of his advisors as there was hostility in the media box after reports that their two colleagues - one photo and the other print - were manhandled by the law enforcing agencies.
