Pakistan to lose $15m if Indian tour cancelled 28 October 2000
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will lose approximately $15 million if the series against India this winter doesn't materialize, officials said. The loss includes $4.5 million only from the television rights. If India doesn't tour, Pakistan will host Bangladesh for three Tests and three one-day internationals. But the series is unlikely to generate revenues and the PCB fear that they might end up by spending from their own pocket. "There will not be any television attraction nor the series (against Bangladesh) will tempt any of the major sponsors," officials stated. They claimed that when Pakistan toured India last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earned $80 million. "But when it is our time to earn, the series doesn't seem to go-ahead. It's a pity." They added that if the International Cricket Council (ICC) ten-year itinerary was approved and the cricketing relations between the two neighbours didn't improve, the PCB would lose approximately $60 million. Although the ICC has given Nov 15 as the deadline to all the cricket boards to submit suggestions and recommendations, the PCB has yet to study the programme. But there was immediate concern after they found out that they have been drawn to play India in five Test series. "The ICC officials have been informally told that the PCB would suffer huge financial loses if they have been drawn to host India three times. We are ready to tour India anytime which would ultimately end up as a huge financial success." The PCB, sources said, will only agree on the 10-year itinerary if the ICC guarantees them on India fulfilling their commitments. "Otherwise, the BCCI or the ICC will have to compensate us." © Dawn
