Galle CC overwhelm Kurunegala
Staff and Agencies - 28 October 2000

Galle Cricket Club proved to be far too good for Kurunegala Y.C.C at Welagedera Stadium today. They eventually won the match by 125 runs.

Galle CC won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat on a wicket that traditionally favours the batsmen. However the southern side was soon in trouble as they slumped to 39 for 3. Opening bowler, W. Kumara, picking up two early wickets, Sudarshana (1) and Karunasena (5), both caught behind.

However, Pasau Wanasinghe (93) rescued his side with a typically solid innings. Wansinghe has been one Galle CC’s most consistent players and today he put on 82 runs with Foneska (28) in what was effectively the match-winning stand. The batsmen never took control of the match and all the Kurunegala bowlers produced decent bowling figures.

In reply, Kurunegala were dismissed for an embarrassing 53 from 26.1 overs. They never came to terms with Galle’s opening bowler, R. Fernando, who returned the remarkable figures of 5 for 10 in seven overs. None of the Kurunegala batsmen reached double figures.
