Canada mourns star player and captain MJ Prashad
Geoff Edwards - 28 October 2000

Martin Joel Prashad ex-Canadian player and Captain will be buried on Monday October 30,2000 at the Streetsville, Mississauga cemetery.

Services will be at the Mississauga Gospel Temple at Barbertown & Mississauga Road, just north of Eglinton Avenue. (south of Highway 401, north of Highways 403 and Queen Elizabeth Way).

Martin rests at the Neweduk Funeral Home at 1981 Dundas St. West, Mississauga- just east of Erin Mills Parkway and west of Mississauga Road next to Fire Station)

Visiting hours are Saturday October 28 from 7 to9 pm and Sunday 29th 7 to 9 pm and also from 2 to 4 pm.

Martin was born in Albion, Guyana August 31 1959 and after being selected to Senior Trials for Guyana at a young age, migrated to Toronto with his family. Sadly he left us on October 26,2000 – at far too young an age.

Martin would have been an asset, on or off the field in ICC Trophy 2001. Martin like the late Ken Bullock and the late pioneer Charles Wilson, regrettably will not be present in person next year to see the fruits of their labours. Cricket Canada must work to make MJP, KB and CW proud. Only hard work, devoted preparation and stellar on-field performances and success can do that! ICC Trophy 2001 must be the ultimate tribute to people who have served Canadian cricket.

Martin is survived by son Duane 12, wife Jeannie (hospitalized at present), mother, sister and brothers including Paul, current national team player & Vice Captain. He is survived also by innumerable club, league and other friends in Canada, USA and internationally. Canada will miss his ready smile, his class and his graciousness. There is no doubt that he will be watching us in ICC Trophy 2001!

In Toronto, Martin first played with Caribs C.C., in a friendly fixture before moving on to outstanding successes with Overseas, Vikings, Toronto & District , Ontario and Canadian teams. Martin was an outstanding batsman and useful off-spin bowler. He was Captain or Vice-Captain at League, Provincial, Regional and at National Level.

Among his many accomplishments were ICC Trophy (Associates Trophy) appearances for Canada in 1986 (England), 1990 (Holland) and in 1994 (Holland ). He also appeared for Canada against the USA(1983), Jamaica (1984), Bermuda (1985), Barbados (1987), Denmark (1988), Holland and Denmark (1989).

Among his many outstanding innings, perhaps his best remembered will be his magnificent innings of 104 runs against Jamaica in 1984. He was cool under pressure, tough and smart, but played the game as it should be played. He was a team player and leader.

M. Joel Prashad rest in peace, your journey has been hard at times!

To family and friends, Canadian cricket shares your great loss.
