Fans eager to buy tickets baton charged 29 October 2000
Police resorted to baton-charge after angry cricket fans failed to get tickets for the third and last one-day match between Pakistan and England here from the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday. According to eye-witnesses people approaching the selected Allied Bank branches for tickets were told that they can buy tickets from the stadium booth. Upon reaching the stadium they failed to get tickets. New Town police was called which used baton charge to disperse the angry fans. It may be added here that tickets were not available at the selected branches for the last three days. Though, tickets are still available if one can use proper connections. The stadium has 12 stands named after famous cricketers with Imran Khan and Fazal Mehmood being the most expensive ones at Rs1,200, followed by Javed Miandad and Javed Burki. There are no seats available at Maqsood Ahmed, Saeed Anwar, Zaheer Abbas, Miran Bux, Waqar Younis, A.H Kardar and Wasim Akram stands. Meanwhile, work on completion of the digital scoreboard has reached a frenzy with just one day left to the game. © Dawn
