The Barbados Nation WI Local: BET bats defy Banks spin
Ancille Inniss - 29 October 2000

Cable & Wireless BET 210-9 vs Banks

An unbeaten half-century by Barbados batsman Antonio Mayers helped Cable and Wireless BET to amass a healthy score against front-runners Banks.

Mayers (64 not out) shared in a ninth-wicket partnership of 61 with West Indies player Corey Collymore, as the tournament leaders were kept in the field all day.

Banks had the advantage in the post-tea session with BET on 149 for eight.

Mayers, batting sensibly, paced himself well when the confident Collymore came to the wicket. Together, the two defied Banks’ spin quartet and were able to push the score forward in quick time.

The partnership finally came to an end when Collymore, after making a valuable 19, departed, leaving Mayers to get further support from the injured Don O’neal today.

Banks could only blame themselves for letting BET off the hook, as they spilled catches and looked complacent in the field.

The day started with Banks reaping early success when in the second over, Wayne Reubens was run out as he darted off for a non-existent run.

Two overs later, O’neal had to retire after hurting his ankle, which meant that Banks would have acquired an advantage by bowling at a new batsman in quick time.

This advantage did not materialise as Adrian Brathwaite (17) and Ron Bates (32) took the score to 60 before Bates skied a catch to long-off.

Captain Brian Johnson, with 46, helped to repair the damage, but from a position of 114 for four, Banks brought themselves back into the game with regular wickets.

Left-arm spinners Winston Reid and Anderson Sealy, both with three wickets each, and leg-spinner Terry Rollock, with two, made sure the middle order fell apart.
