The Sports Minister, Laksmann Kiriella, has ordered the development of fast practice pitches in Sri Lanka so that the national team will be better prepared when they are required tour countries such as South Africa and Australia.
Ten training wickets are to be immediately developed on a plot of land adjoining the Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.
"There is a vacant block of land next to the Premadasa Stadium," the Sports Minister revealed. "It will be perfect for building fast practice wickets. I have already ordered work to begin on the project."
I was taken aback by the fragility of our batsmen on the fast wickets in South Africa," he explained. "I knew something had to be done immediately. That is why I began work to make these fast strips."
The Minister is known to favour the Premadasa International Stadium and is keen to promote the venue, which has hosted fewer international games in recent times.
