One-day tournament (Departments): Wapda, HBL, NBP and Customs win fifth-round encounter Mahmood Ahmad - 21 April 2001
Faisal Irfan, the right-handed pace man, grabbed 5 wickets and Adil Nasir, the skipper, made a fighting unbeaten century to guide Wapda to a narrow three-wicket win over Khan Research Laboratories in the 5th round match of the One-day tournament (Departments), played at Jinnah Stadium, Gujranwala. Faisal bowled at a tight line and length for his ten overs to restrict KRL to 239 in the allotted fifty overs, after the KRL openers - Saeed Anwar Jnr and Saeed Bin Nasir - had given their side a commendable start of 50 in 9.2 overs. He bagged five important scalps for just 35 runs to inflict real damage on the opposition's strong middle order. Wapda found themselves in problems right at the start of their innings, losing two wickets for just 19 on the board. However, Adil Nisar, coming at number 4, ensured with his brilliant knock of 124 off just 115 balls that he ultimate honours went to his side. The captain hit 11 fours and 2 sixes to guide his side to victory with around three overs to spare, with a fair amount of help coming from Mohammad Sarfraz (29 off 38) and Mohammad Aslam (18 off 24), both batting down in the order. In the second match of this round, Habib Bank (HBL) thrashed Pakistan International Airlines by seven wickets in a high-scoring match, played at the Sheikhupura Stadium. Saleem Elahi, opening the innings for HBL, was the chief architect in his side's victory, making 170 off only 142 balls (22 fours and 1 six). He was helped a by controlled 43 (58 balls) by Hasan Raza, as their side knocked off the required 262 in around 44 overs with seven wickets to spare. Earlier, PIA, electing to bat first after winning the toss, put up a competitive 261 in the allotted 50 overs, which contained a magnificent 101 off 102 by Sohail Jaffer. However, the total just did not prove enough against some high class batting performance by the opponents, as they went down in the match a bit too easily despite having the likes of Wasim Akram and Moin Khan in the side. Pakistan Customs surpassed a resolute Agricultural Bank side by 16 runs in the third encounter of this round, at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad. Playing first after winning the toss, Customs posted a fighting 267 on the board, with Ali Naqvi, Aamer Bashir and Naved-ul-Hasan contributing with 65 (81 ball, 5 fours), 54 (71 balls, 4 fours) and 43 not out (39 balls, 1 four, 1 six). ADBP replied with 251 in 47.5 overs, with most of their upper order batsmen reaching into their 30's, but failing in the end to build on. In the last match, National Bank thumped Allied Bank by 73 runs, after scoring 269 for 7 in their allotted fifty over. Salman Butt scored a patient 70 (119 balls) to lay the foundation for a big score, after losing his opening partner early in the innings. In the end, it was for the hurricane knocks of 56 (45 balls) and 43 (30 balls) by Mohammad Javed and Imran Javed, respectively, which helped NBP reach a total well in excess of 250. ABL never looked in contention of winning the match, especially after losing six of their top batsmen for just 86 and nine for 149 by the 43rd over. It was, however, an unbeaten 47-run partnership for the last wicket between Mohammad Zahid (25 off 34) and Aaqib Javed (29 off 26), which helped them in reaching a fairly respectable total in the allotted overs. © CricInfo Limited
